POSITION PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Divisional Director of Philanthropy, the Director of Major Gifts is a new position created in a robust and growing fundraising and marketing team. The Director of Major Gifts will work with a portfolio of 75 high net worth donors and manage the major gifts team, currently 3.5 staff. The Salvation Army’s Greater New York region covers all of NYC, Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley, as far North as Kingston, NY. 

The Director of Major Gifts will build a portfolio from the ground up, with a strategically identified prospect pool screened and prioritized by CCS Fundraising. All prospects are current donors, never before individually cultivated, and capable of making five, six, and seven figure gifts. 


The Director of Major Gifts will also supervise the major gifts team, currently consisting of two major gift officers, a major gift assistant, and one individual devoted to mid-level giving part-time. The Director of Major Gifts will provide mentorship and strategic guidance for the gift officers in their cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors. The team is in the process of adapting a moves management system, and the Director of Major Gifts will support the gift officers in adjusting to the implementation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and mentor the major gifts staff, ensuring that they are utilizing best practices and meeting goals.
  • Coordinate tracking of key engagement and fundraising metrics for the major gifts team for monthly reporting to the Divisional Director of Philanthropy.
  • Collaborate with staff members from Territorial Headquarters to plan and execute territory-wide major gift fundraising strategies and report out on progress.
  • Create a portfolio of 75 high net worth donors, utilizing existing portfolio recommendations.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward the portfolio with the goal of converting the previously uncultivated donors into engaged stakeholders with multi-year pledges.
  • Collaborate with the planned giving team to secure blended gifts and co-manage some donors, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the communications and marketing team on donor messaging and materials.
  • Engage programmatic staff and local pastors in donor meetings and solicitations.

Requirements

Minimum Education Required

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) required.


Minimum Years and Type of Experience

  • 7+ years of direct fundraising experience with supervisory experience.


Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Proven results in cultivating high net worth donors and soliciting 6-7 figure gifts.
  • Experience working within a moves management system.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring other fundraisers.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency in computer programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to quickly learn the Salesforce database and other virtual fundraising platforms.
  • Professional demeanor on the phone, in emails, and in person with donors, senior executives, and teammates. 
  • Passion for the mission of The Salvation Army and the services provided to the community.
